what a weekend!

I suppose it says something that I'm writing about my weekend on Tuesday night and am STILL too exhausted to trouble with formatting pictures for my blog. I have taken the time, however, to upload new ones to my picasa album. ------>

For those of you who don't know, my mom, dad, grandma, brother, sister-in-law, niece, aunt, uncle, cousin, and his two girls were in town. And yes, it was as amazing and chaotic as you can imagine! My niece is 9 days younger than Sophie and a real spitfire! She's been walking since 9 months and was all over the place. By Sunday, she and Sophie would disappear only to be found playing in Sophie's room or climbing stairs (!!!!). She really inspired Sophie and Sophie is now doing LOTS of things she wasn't doing before Ella arrived, such as climbing in and out of her car and walking while holding only one hand. This was a short glimpse of what we're in for during Christmas and I can't wait.

Not everyone stayed in our house, just my immediate family and my grandma. The others stayed in a hotel. I don't know WHERE we would've put them!! We enjoyed great Kentucky fare, such as $.79 Burgers and Shakes, Graeters Ice Cream, Spauldings Donuts, and Joseph Beth. The boys went to Keeneland, mom and I went to Rebelle (my yarn store) for Socktoberfest and the other girls went to Natasha's. We ate like royalty, kept liquor barn in business, and laughed at the craziness that took place with the Wii. (check out Roy's blog for more on this) Watching my dad play pool brought back memories of my Grandma Betty playing Pac Man on the atari, no doubt exactly what he wants to hear.

Roy's family has embraced me with open arms and I love them dearly, but there's nothing like my own kin to share my goofiness, understand my upbringing, and share the stories of childhood.

And if you are intending on hosting a party this large, I would like to suggest investing in a large peculator.

Halloween

Have you looked under your oven lately? Go ahead. It's Halloween. Do something that will scare the tar out of you.

a few of her favorite things

an unexpected week

On Monday night, my eye hurt. Nothing crazy, just a little sore. Tuesday morning I went to work and it was a little bit swollen and irritated, but I let it go. Nothing major. At 1:00, my boss sent me home with pink eye. Sophie had it about 2 weeks ago and I must've picked it up when I changed her sheets or touched something germy.

That being said, my boss hasn't let me come back to work all week. I went in yesterday and when she saw me said, "What are you doing here? Go home. I'm serious. You can't be here!" I called her this morning and she told me to stay home again today. So here's a rundown of my week...

Tuesday afternoon: Nap. Picked up Sophie at 3:00.

Wednesday: Swallowed my guilt and took Sophie to day care. I SERIOUSLY cleaned my living room (I'm talking pulled out couches, went through magazines, vacuumed the radiators, CLEANED) and created a little reading nook. Then I made a pot of tea and played Zelda.Thursday: Tried to go to work and was sent home, but not until I wiped down my area with alcohol swabs. My mother-in-law had Sophie so Roy and I had breakfast than I slept from (you ready for this?) 11:30 - 2:30. Mmmm.... nap. Played a little more zelda, did a little more cleaning, then Sophie came home.

Friday: I don't know yet! Sophie's taking an early nap and I'm looking forward to a day of playing. I might call the doctor seeing as my eyes are still pink and itchy. But I have rested and taken some time for myself this week. Unexpected and wonderful.

Our silly little girl

We encourage Sophie to be silly, but it's nice to see her do it all on her own!

Progress

I'm sort of an information junky. I'm not as bad as Roy, but our collection of Reference books is pretty impressive. So when Roy spotted a back tooth coming out of Sophie's gums, I rushed to the bookshelf. A BACK TOOTH? Before she has her first 4, bottom front teeth!? Inconceivable! But my eyes did not lie and my book did say that sometimes teeth do come in out of order.

This child... she doesn't walk or stand without help. She shows no signs of a mama or dada. I can give her a bowl of cheerios, raisins, and goldfish and she will sit for 20 minutes meticulously picking out which things she wants to eat, she no longer has interest in food that is cut up - she wants the WHOLE grilled cheese, in hand, so she can take her own delicate bites.

There is no Reference book in the world that can tell me what Sophie will do next and that is why she amazes me.

family

Yesterday we went to Roy's grandparents house to fix their computer and discuss festival stuff. Jean has been in Florida much of this year and I was grateful Sophie had the opportunity to spend time with Great Grandma.

We see great granddad pretty often. He stops by our house regularly and we also spent time with him a couple of weekends at and Roy's dad and Step-mom's house. Yesterday, he told Sophie that when she got a little older, he would buy her some chickens to take care of... at HIS house, thank goodness. I don't think the city of Lexington would take too kindly to a chicken coop in our back yard.

Sophie hasn't been to Bob and Jean's beautiful house on Elkhorn Creek for a while and she had a great time looking around and pointing at things. We walked by the creek, sat on the porch, and took in the beautiful, 70 degree day.
My family comes in 2 weeks. Mom and dad, Jeremy, Stacey, and Ella, Grandma, Aunt Sara and Uncle John, Chris and Tonya and their girls, Hannah and Olivia. It's going to be crazy and wonderful. I can't wait!

Sometimes, work just sucks

I found out this week that I have worked at the Lexington Public Library for 5 years and 8 months. During this time I have worked on, I would say, 7 Staff Development Days, 4 of which I have been planned, organized and basically worked my ass off in the hopes that roughly 200 staff members will be "developed".

Today was the culmination of about 10 months of hard work from a diverse, opinionated, and wonderful committee of which I was chair. Also this week was the monthly board meeting of the Library Trustees, which is a huge part of my job. I worked past 7pm, 3 out of the last 5 days and am eternally grateful to my amazing husband for picking up and dropping of Sophie at daycare, feeding her her many meals, and putting her to bed on those nights that I couldn't see straight.

One of the hardest things about Staff Day is knowing that the vocal minority who HATE staff day will really ruin it for me. I try not to let it get to me, but when you put that much time and effort in to planning something and someone looks at you (knowing you're chair of the Committee) and says, "This was the worst Staff Day ever!", it's tough not to let it get to you.

But as I was detoxing at Atomic Cafe with co-workers, Committee members, and a nice frosty Anchor Steam, I was proud of the day my hard-working committee members put together - negativity be dammed! The day was beautiful, the planned walks around town exceeded our expectations, and the Organic Peruvian Coffee catered by 3rd Street Stuff was more delicious than I could even imagine.

Today, over the afore mentioned Anchor Steam, I looked at my boss and asked if I could go off the committee. She gave me a very sympathetic look, smiled, and said yes.

This was a very, very happy day.

working from home

Sophie woke up this morning with a crusty, partly swollen eye. She was in a great mood, but I'm not one to mess with that kind of thing so off we went to see Dr. Warner. I stopped by work to check my email, voice mail, and put some work on my jump drive- just in case.

It's a good thing I did. Pink Eye. Easily treatable, very contagious, so home with my files and a tired baby who would (hopefully!) nap long enough for me to get a good bit of work in.

3 hours, a rested, fed, and happy baby later, I'm rewarding myself with blog post. I got a remarkable amount done.

Here are some long overdue photos. Oh! And for those of you who don't know, that's dear mom and dad on my previous post. Mom told me that dad came home from work and said, "Have you seen Anna's blog recently?" when she said no, dad said she should probably take a look. Thanks to my dear brother for keeping me stocked with pictures of them back in the day.

Roy is such an amazing dad. Because of him, Sophie will now give us high 5's and put the ear bud of my iPod up to her ear and dance. He'll even talk on her pretend cell phone with a bowl on his head. Is that dedication or what?
We recently got furniture for our front porch and have enjoyed our evenings outdoors.
I especially like this one because Sophie looks like she's trying to tell us she loves us after a few too many.
Bath time is ever so much fun.
For Sophie's birthday, the dear Nikki gave her babylegs. I have been coveting these from the moment I saw them. Roy thinks they're totally impractical. What a guy.
